Onlyfans (Correct spelling: Only fans) is a web service for the paid provision of web content such as photos and videos (paid content), mainly erotic or pornographic content, but also the live streaming of celebrities outside of this category.
In principle, the structure ofOnlyfans is very similar to that of ad-supported social networks such as Instagram or Facebook: after signing up, users can create a public profile and upload content such as photos and videos. You can search for other users, subscribe to content from other users, and communicate using public comments and private messages.
The main difference with ad-supported social media portals is that profile owners have the ability to request money from subscribers (known as “fans”) and, as a rule, do so on the condition that they provide their own content. Without a subscription, a fan only sees the profile information of the submitting user, possibly also his previous posts, but without photos or videos. Before accessing paid subscriptions, subscribed users must first provide a payment card (credit or debit card) which can be used to set up on-site credit or can be used directly to pay for content individual.
Users submitting content have three options for receiving money from fans:
- You can charge a fee of your choice (at least $ 4,99 per month) to access your profile, through which discounts can be given for long-term subscriptions and during short-term marketing campaigns.
- Individual content can be offered to subscribers for a separate fee (pay-per-view)
- Fans can also pay voluntary “tips” to content providers.
According to the website, OnlyFans keeps 20% of paid sales and pays 80% to suppliers. It is not possible to download the content with the functions offered on the site.
In principle, all types of legal content can be offered via OnlyFans. Most users providing content offer erotic or pornographic content, but there are also providers in the areas of music, art, crowdfunding and fundraising.
The large proportion of pornographic content can be explained by the fact that Onlyfans, unlike similar payment platforms, does not prohibit pornographic content, but expressly allows it and allows performers to generate revenue without exclusive rights marketing intermediaries (e.g. movie studios). A limiting factor is that much of the content inOnlyfans is disclosed after a short time on freely accessible porn portals, the automatically generated watermark in each video, the network address of the user profile ofOnlyfans, which can attract new users. Many successful influencers on ad-supported platforms, for example B. from the fitness or model area, only use fans as an additional channel to generate additional revenue from particularly interested followers. The individual “fan” is offered a more exclusive contact with the creator.
Little is known about the London-based portal operating company Fenix International Limited.[1] At the request of the news magazine The mirror (March 2020), the company said it has 24 million users worldwide, of which approximately 500000 offer paid content, of which 4000 are German. The average subscription price is $14.[2]
